Mulkirigala
An ancient rock temple

Discover Mulkirigala
Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya is a historic Buddhist rock-temple complex inland from Tangalle. Its shrines are arranged on terraces cut into a striking rocky outcrop, offering a peaceful cultural excursion away from the coastline.
Inside the cave temples visitors can see Buddha images and painted walls that reflect centuries of religious life. Parts of the surviving decorative painting are associated with the Kandyan period, when the temple underwent important restoration.
A series of stone steps connects the terraces, so the visit involves climbing and may be strenuous in hot weather. Dress respectfully for an active place of worship, with shoulders and knees covered, and follow local guidance about footwear and photography.
