Discover Rekawa Turtle Hatchery
Rekawa is a coastal village near Tangalle known for its beaches, lagoon habitat and community-led protection of nesting sea turtles. Local conservation groups patrol the shore and work to safeguard nests where turtles return to lay their eggs.
An evening turtle-watch experience focuses on observing wildlife responsibly in its natural environment. Nesting is seasonal and unpredictable: visitors may spend time waiting, and sightings are never guaranteed. Guides set viewing distances and lighting rules to minimise disturbance.
For the welfare of the turtles, avoid flash photography, touching animals or requesting artificial hatchings or releases. A conservation-focused visit supports local awareness while giving guests a chance to learn why the coastline is ecologically important.
